The namesake and inspiration for this modern interpretation is the service shoe introduced by the U.S. Army in 1943. Steve McQueen famously wore it in The Great Escape, cementing its status as a cultural icon.
Based on the Munson last and meticulously handcrafted in Japan, the construction of these shoes is truly remarkable: roughout Horween Chromexcel leather, an unstructured toe, single, triple, and quadruple stitching, "Made in USA" Vibram soles and heels, and a Goodyear welt crafted in the UK.
For this limited-edition model, Horween's Waxed Flesh Chromexcel roughout leather is used. The wax coating creates a polished surface that evolves over time into a suede-like texture with a rich patina. This leather combines durability, adaptability, and superior water resistance.
During World War II, when Horween supplied Chromexcel leather for the U.S. Marines' combat boots, soldiers applied wax to the outer surface of their boots to improve waterproofing. This practice directly inspired the creation of Waxed Flesh leather.
